Rust, Uromyces Betae

Rust is a fungus that appears a little sporadically on individual plants every year. However in certain years, especially if it is humid, Uromyces can occur in large quantities, above all if the varieties are sensitive. Rust is favoured by a humid coast climate with a temperature that preferably does not exceed 25ºC. In Denmark major attacks have appeared.

The most important Hilleshög varieties are tested, especially the ones to be marketed in countries where rust is a problem.

Preventive actions

  • Maintain a good crop rotation, preferably of at least four years, as the fungus survives on plant debris in the soil.
  • Avoid irrigation if the risk of infection exists.
  • If approved crop protection products are available spraying can be justified in cases of early infection.
